Can you tell the difference between PVC and timber?
With all the demand for lower budget windows that look good yet offer stylish new windows at a more affordable price, the heat is on for window manufacturers to produce PVCu windows that replicate their timber originals. Slimmer meeting rails, astragals (glazing bars), wood effect foils and decorative glazing that mimic timber windows. Here are two sash windows that feature glazing bars – although slightly different in design you can see that there is little between them from the distance of the images. Incredibly, the top ones are the PVC-u versions, with ever improving likeness to the sash windows constructed from timber, these beautiful alternatives offer those on a lighter budget the opportunity to improve the appearance of their homes. It is not always a budget issue for our customers, some people like the modern materials better and it is a choice of taste. Modern timber windows now offer the advantages of PVCu – at one point they were unable to replicate original single glazed windows whilst utilising the thermal properties of double glazing as they were just too heavy to be lifted on the cord and pulley systems that operated the sash mechanism.
Windows were forever changed when the innovation of using the laminating technique applied to large scale structure such as churches and bridges was employed with windows and doors.
This simple yet ingenious technique puts the natural characteristics of wood to a positive use. When wood gets wet it absorbs the moisture and warps in the direction of the grain – by layering the wood with the grain of one section of wood opposing that of it’s neighbour, went the wood gets wet it is resisted by the adjoining pieces. It is this incredibly strengthening process that creates a timber than is more than the sum of it’s parts.
This use of wood sections also has further benefits – the tree can be processed into sections rather than requiring long planks. Knots can be removed without wasting more of the timber – meaning that more of the tree is used.
What does this mean? We can help you choose windows that you like, that suits your home and suits your purse, no compromise, you will get the best quality and top performance double glazing which will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
